Push for Coal Tar Sealant Ban

San Antonio City Councilman Ron Nirenberg’s push to ban coal tar based sealants goes in front of a city committee Wednesday.

It’s something he started last year “to ban the use of coal tar based sealants, that are typically used in road construction and parking lots,” Nirenberg said.

It’s in response to health concerns.

“That coal tar based sealants are a leading cause of carcinogens that make their way into our water supply,” he said.

“And the industry has been quite accepting, in fact there are many alternatives available that are much more beneficial to public health,” Nirenberg said. “And, in fact, there is very little economic impact to these new restrictions.”

He said this is a business friendly approach to regulation.
