SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) — Officials at the border say they’ve made a big drug bust after finding thousands of pounds of methamphetamine stashed in a shipment of lettuce.
U.S Customs and Border Protection says officers at the Pharr International Bridge were using scanning equipment on the truck that crossed from Mexico when they decided to open up the doors of the trailer and take a look inside.
Hidden among the crates of lettuce, 3,429 pounds of meth.
Officials say the drugs have a street value of over $48 million, making the bust the largest meth encounter in the history of the Hidalgo Port of Entry.
Customs officials haven’t released the name or nationality of the truck driver and didn’t say what charges will be filed against them.
