Report: Hondo Volunteer Fire Company ends service after 115 years
SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) — A group of area volunteer fire fighters has responded to its last call.
KSAT -12 reports that after 115 years of service, the Hondo Volunteer Fire Company is no more, due to disagreements on leadership, equipment and funding.
Hondo Volunteer Fire Company President Philip Batteau tells KSAT that the company and Medina County Emergency Services District 6 were not able to come to an agreement over some air packs that are used to help firefighters breath in clean oxygen while doing their jobs.
There was also a disagreement on extrication tools used to rescue people from heavily damaged vehicles.
Finally, the matter of a chief. The company currently has a chief but the Medina County Emergency Services District 6 wants to hire a new one.
Firefighters from Medina County ESD 1 and neighboring departments will help cover the more than 500 square miles that had been covered by the Hondo Volunteer Fire Company.
