Report: Letter to Major League Baseball suggest new stadium for San Antonio Missions could be ready by 2028
SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) — The San Antonio Missions could be playing in a new stadium when the 2028 season gets underway.
According to a report from KSAT 12, San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg and Bexar County Judge Peter Sakai have been working with the owners of the city’s minor league baseball team to develop a plan for a new ballpark.
In a letter to Major League Baseball, Nirenberg and Sakai write that the new stadium is part of the San Pedro Creek Park District Project and that will have about 4,500 seats with a capacity for about 8,000 people.
The capacity at the Mission’s current home field, Nelson W. Wolff Municipal Stadium off Highway 90 is about 9,200.
The letter states that the stadium will host 70 home games for the Missions but will also be used for tournaments, festivals and other special events.
At this point there is no estimate as to how much the new stadium will cost but the city plans to use funds from bond distribution instead of property taxes.
The Missions will reportedly contribute revenue through ticket fees and lease payments.
A decision on the new stadium should be made this fall.
