SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) — There is some positive news from the recent count of homeless citizens in Bexar County.

Brenda Mascarro at The South Alamo Regional Alliance for the Homeless says overall, the number of homeless citizens is down 6%.

There is one group that is seeing some growth.

Mascarro tells us the number of families experiencing homelessness is up 18% over last year.

She says their research shows that in most cases, it’s due to the lack of affordable housing in San Antonio.

“We’ve established a work group so that we can increase our efforts to help families having difficulty paying their rent.”

Other findings in the annual count of homeless residents include a 6% decrease in the number of homeless Veterans.

The results come from the annual Point in Time Count that was conducted on January 24th, 2019.
