“Never again will you be capable of ordinary human feeling. Everything will be dead inside you. Never again will you be capable of love, or friendship, or joy of living, or laughter, or curiosity, or courage, or integrity. You will be hollow. We shall squeeze you empty, and then we shall fill you with ourselves.”
George Orwell, 1984.
You want to know why some young dude will walk into a Wal-Mart or a small town church or a movie theater and start randomly shooting people with a smile on his face?
Same reason some other young dude will hold up his camera and record another young dude, or maybe a bunch of young dudes, or maybe a bunch of young ladies– with or without masks, either for robbery or politics or easy fame–beat the crap out of an old man or a teenage girl to the edge of death and laugh about it.
Same reason some privilaged butt-wipe will record themselves calling a cop a “pig” because they were pulled over for having a brake light out, even though a brake light is very important to your health when you’re braking, and not to mention that pig-cop walks out the door of his house every day not knowing if he’s coming home.
Same reason a politician or an “activist” or an “influencer” will post the private information of the supporters of a political opponent, endangering innocent peoples’ lives, as well as their privacy and livelihoods.
Same reason some asshole will toss their drink and spit snot into the face of a drive-thru cashier at McDonalds because they didn’t get their fries.
Same reason young people take videos of themselves dangling from skyscrapers, twerking on moving cars, barfing cinnamon, eating laundry detergent, and setting themselves on fire.
Same reason you’ll call someone you don’t know a douchebag or an asshat in a comment on a thread.
Same reason folks post pictures of themselves at the gym, or pictures of the fancy dinner they’re eating.
Same reason chicks will pose for 300 selfies from the exact same angle, with the exact same lighting. Dudes, too. And usually more pictures than the ones of their kid’s birthday party.
Same reason I post my poems, and am posting this now.
The monsters we are now suffering are the monsters we created, and continue to create, no matter the self-serving, humble-boasting bullshit we post online to make ourselves feel nobler than we are or ever will be. We inhabit and nourish a selfish, moronic age of killers, jerks, slobs, and fools.
In other words, we are the monster.
And our lives are entertainment.
We are content.
We are click bait.
And all this so one nerdy man-child in a pair of cheap sneakers can be a multi-billionaire. Or a relatively small rabble of rich perverts can have whatever they want, whomever they want, whenever they want.
You should be weeping, too.
No matter whom you tend to vote for…
Jesus loves you and so do I,
