RI Senator Travels to TX to Take On Smith

A Rhode Island Senator travels to Texas to challenge a San Antonio Congressman when it comes to a climate change investigation.

Democrat Sheldon Whitehouse stopped at the State Capitol in Austin Monday to take aim at Lamar Smith’s subpoenas for documents in climate change investigations against Exxon Mobil launched by the State of Massachusetts and New York.

“You don’t have to go farther than Texas’ famous universities to find confirmation about what is going on from people who know what they are talking about” Whitehouse said, disagreeing strongly with the House Science Committee’s long-standing positions on climate change.

Whitehouse also said Smith is wrong for issuing the subpoeans in the first place.

“Representative Smith is not just here doing something unprecedented to obstruct state officials in the performance of their duties–he’s doing it on behalf of the subject of their investigation” Whitehouse said.

Attorneys General in both Massachusetts and New York are defying Smith’s subpoeana orders.
