SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) — San Antonio ISD is moving ahead with a plan geared towards downsizing, and it is now planning to give more details on a so-called ‘rightsizing plan’ brought forth in November 2023.
The district says it wants to repurpose a number of facilities affected in the decision so that buildings continue to benefit and serve the community. To do that, the district says a Facilities Repurposing Panel has been put together to determine the most appropriate use of schools closed.
In a Monday release, SAISD says the process will formally begin this fall as soon as a consultant has been formally hired to manage the Request for Proposal (RFP) process. Once the RFP process has opened, the panel will vet the proposed submissions and make recommendations to staff.
Throughout the repurposing process, the district says it will engage stakeholders to consider new possibilities. SAISD will start holding public information updates next week through a series of meetings at high schools to explain the repurposing process and its timeline.
Meeting schedule:
Aug. 20 (Tues), 6 p.m., Jefferson High School
Aug. 27 (Tues), 6 p.m., Edison High School
Aug. 28 (Wed), 6 p.m., Highlands High School
Aug. 29 (Thurs), 6 p.m., Lanier High School
Sept. 3 (Tues), 6 p.m., Brackenridge High School
Sept. 4 (Wed), 6 p.m., Burbank High School
Sept. 5 (Thurs), 6 p.m., Sam Houston High School
Families and community members again will be brought into the process during public engagement meetings when potential uses are being considered for specific facilities.
When the Board of Trustees approved its ad hoc committee’s recommendations in the HVAC after-action report on May 13, 2024, the board instructed the superintendent to conduct another comprehensive study of excess facility capacity in SAISD’s school buildings by November 2025.
