San Antonio City Council hears suggestions for dockless vehicles

SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) — San Antonio City Council members spent part of the afternoon hearing suggestions on how to make electric scooters a welcome mode of transportation in the city.

During a “B” Wednesday afternoon, John Jacks, Director of Center City Development and Operations brought up a number of recommendations that addressed the concerns brought up while surveying residents.

They include limiting the times the scooters can be used to between the hours of 6AM and 11PM.

“We found a significant drop in the number of crashes and near crashes during those hours.”

Jacks also suggested that the scooters not be used on sidewalks and have a top speed of 15 miles per hour.

The city would also recommend but not require helmets. One of the biggest concerns the scooters present is how they are left in areas where people walk. Usually on street corners, blocking crosswalks and handicap access to sidewalks.

Jacks addressed the issue by saying it would be required that they are placed in designated parking areas when not in use.

The number of scooters in the city would be limited to 5,000 provided by 3 vendors.

To help offset the cost to the city, the vendors would have to pay a 100 dollar annual fee for each vehicle.

The recommendations will be brought up for further discussion at a future city council meeting.
