San Antonio man sentenced to 15 years in prison for trying to meet child for sex

SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) — A San Antonio man convicted of trying to have sex with a minor now has a 15-year sentence in federal prison.

After that sentence is wrapped up, James Martin Shearer, 48, will serve five more years in the pen for trying to transfer obscene material to the same minor.

Court documents show Shearer made contact with what he thought was a 15-year-old girl. He went so far as to ask for an address and a photo before he said he wanted to take the child for a ride in his car. Shearer continued communication via text messages the next day, and the two agreed the girl would skip school. The conversation got sexual with Shearer saying the girl’s age excited him.

On April 27, 2023, Shearer sent an image of himself and went to the meeting spot. Instead of finding the expected teenager, Shearer found multiple San Antonio police officers. Investigators say meth, condoms and other sexual items were found in Shearer’s car.

Shearer was found guilty of both counts in trial by a federal jury March 5, 2024. In addition to the 15 years in prison, he was ordered 10 years of supervised release and must register as a sex offender.
