San Antonio man who died at Canyon Lake was a professor at a local university

Our Lady of the Lake University mourns the loss of a longtime professor who apparently drowned this week at Canyon Lake.

The body of Dr. Cary Guffey was recovered by first responders Wednesday afternoon after he flipped from his float and failed to resurface. He was 53 years old.

In addition to working in the biology program at OLLU for more than 20 years, Guffey was a sponsor of Sigma Zeta Honor Society and served as the faculty athletics representative.

“This sudden loss of Dr. Guffey will leave a tremendous hole in our community,” said OLLU President Diane Melby in a statement.

A Mass for Guffey was held Thursday at the university’s Sacred Heart Chapel.

“Please keep the Guffey family in your prayers as they deal with this tragic loss. Pray, also, for the many students and alumni who will be grieving the loss of a favorite professor,” said Melby.

Funeral services are pending.
