SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) — The San Antonio Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are teaming up to talk gun security and safety.

Chief William McManus says hundreds of guns are stolen from vehicles every year. He says the majority of those thefts happen on the northwest side, at locations off I-10 between Loop 410 and Loop 1604.

McManus has some simple advice on how to avoid being the victim of a gun theft.

“Don’t leave your weapon unattended.”

He urges all gun owners to avoid leaving your gun in your vehicle because most of the 3,881 guns stolen in the past three years, were taken from cars.
