San Antonio Police: Officers find drugs in pickup after driver slams into SAPD cruiser in Northwest Side parking lot

SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) — A San Antonio Police Officer escaped serious injury Monday morning when his cruiser was t-boned by a man in a pickup.

At around 6 a.m. Monday, the officer was in the parking lot of a shopping center in the 12700 block of IH-10 when he was hit.

Police say the driver who hit the officer was parked behind an IHOP, waiting for someone to arrive. That person was a no-show, so the man began driving away.

According to police, the driver, a man in his 30’s, either fell asleep or passed out behind the wheel and slammed into the police vehicle, which was also making its way through the parking lot.

The damage to the cruiser was severe enough that the officer had to be extracted from the unit by firefighters.

He was checked out at the scene by ambulance workers.

The pickup driver then saw his rough morning get even worse. Officers began searching the man’s truck and found what they call a “lot of narcotics”.

The driver, who was the only person in the pickup at the time, was brought to an area hospital.

His name and the severity of his injuries haven’t been released.

The crash is still being investigated.

KTSA News will provide updates on this developing story when more information is released.
