San Antonio teens charged with capital murder

SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) — Two teenagers were arrested this week by San Antonio police in relation to a fatal shooting near the Ingram Park Mall in January.

Police said Kevin Luna, 18, and Derrick Sentmore, 17, shot and killed Patrick Zavala, 27, after an attempted robbery turned into a fatal shooting outside Pancake Joe’s restaurant on Ingram Road just after midnight on January 3, according to the Express-News.

Luna was taken into custody on Wednesday. Police reportedly arrested Sentmore on Tuesday.

Zavala was reportedly found by police inside his vehicle injured with a gunshot wound and died later at a local hospital.

Surveillance video revealed to police that Zavala was robbed at gunpoint while driving and the shooting caused him to crash into a concrete wall. Police said the video revealed the two teens exiting Zavala’s vehicle and fleeing. They reportedly stole Zavala’s cellphone.

Investigators discovered security footage from a location near the shooting that captured audio of Luna saying he left some property on the floorboard of Zavala’s vehicle, in addition to finding Luna’s fingerprints on the property, which was not identified by police. Luna’s fingerprints were also reportedly discovered in a fenced-off area near the scene of the shooting.

When investigators ran the prints, it matched with Luna who was entered into the database as a runaway. Sentmore was identified to police via a tip.

Police obtained a search warrant for Luna’s social media accounts which reportedly revealed an audio message where the teen admitted to shooting a man in the chest after something “went wrong” and that he had left something in the vehicle after the shooting.

Police said the teens did not know Zavala prior to the robbery and do not know why they had arranged to meet.
