Schertz PD: School put on lockdown, homeless sex offender with knife arrested

SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) — The Schertz Police Department is sending out word all children are safe after a registered sex offender was arrested close to a school.

A call came in around 8:30 a.m. on report of an assault along the 21600-block of IH-35NB Access Road. Officers soon found the suspect, Raul Aragon, 46, near the Schertz School of Science and Technology armed with a knife. While he was quickly apprehended by police, the campus was put on lockdown for approximately 10 minutes.

“We are thankful for the relationships that we continue to have with our public and private schools concerning school safety. This morning’s incident is a clear example of the importance of having established protocols and relationships in place to address such incidents,” said Police Chief Jim Lowery. “The suspect never entered the school property and the disruption to this morning’s school schedule was minimal.”

Further investigation found Aragon was just released from the Texas Department of Corrections and is likely homeless. He was taken to the Comal County Jail where he was charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon (2nd Degree Felony) and Failure to Comply with Sex Offender Duty to Register Annually (3rd Degree Felony).
