Schertz PD: Young man hit, killed by train

SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) — A man between 17 and 20 years of age is dead after the Schertz Police Department says he was hit by a moving train Thursday morning.

Investigators say the man was hit on the tracks just before 8 a.m. near FM 3009 and FM 78.

Union Pacific railroad officials say the man stepped onto the tracks as the train was closing in, and he was later pronounced dead at the scene.

“This is a tragic accident that may have been avoidable, and we are working diligently to identify the victim so we can notify next of kin,” said Schertz Police Chief Jim Lowery.  “As a reminder, walking along or crossing railroad tracks should always be avoided as it is not only dangerous, but also illegal.  Pedestrians should only cross railroad tracks at designated crossing zones.”

Train tracks at multiple crossings were closed during the investigation, but have since been reopened.
