Seguin Officer Shoots Armed Robber

A Seguin Police Officer is on standard administrative leave after an overnight robbery leads to a police chase–and the man who started it all shot dead.

It all began at around 11:30 Tuesday Night at the Pic n Pac near Highway 123 and I-10.

“He’s seen by officers arriving on scene–and a patron that came in–putting a short barrel rifle in the backpack he was wearing” Seguin Police Chief Kevin Kelso said, describing the robbery–in which the thief left the store without getting any cash.

From there, a nearly twenty-minute chase began–eventually coming to an end when 44-year old Darrel Machemehl finally stopped in the town of Kingsbury.

“The suspect then got off the motorcycle… has the backpack in his hand…. and was aggressively approaching the officers, telling them he was going to shoot them” Kelso said.

A short time later, a 13-year veteran fired the fatal shot.

“They told him 42 times to drop the backpack. As he continued to encroach, the officers feared for their safety” Kelso said.
