Selma police make arrest in connection with shooting death of UIW student

SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) — More than a year after a UIW nursing student was shot to death in Selma, an arrest has been made.

Selma police tell KSAT-12 they have arrested Jacob Daniel Serna for the April, 2023 murder of 22-year-old Joseph Banales.

Banales was found dead in his car on IH-35 near The Forum shopping center. He had been shot before crashing his car just after 11:30 p.m. April 15.

Police say Banales was driving home from a military ball when he was shot.

During the investigation, Serna had been interviewed by police after claiming he was a witness to the shooting. He is now charged with murdering Banales.
