SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) – A stubborn blaze that destroyed a Castle Hills home overnight sent two firefighters to the hospital with burns.

Grady Schmidt with the Castle Hills Fire Department and a firefighter from Balcones Heights were injured while battling the blaze on Honeysuckle Lane near Loop 410 shortly after 9 Tuesday night. He says they were caught in a flashover.

“A flashover’s pretty bad. It was all fire everywhere,” said Schmidt.

It took them awhile to find their way out and Schmidt suffered first- and second-degree burns on both sides of his face. He and the Balcones Heights firefighter, who suffered burns to his face and hand, were taken to a hospital. Both returned to continue battling the blaze after they were treated for their injuries.

“Just coming back to do our job,” said Schmidt.

Several other fire departments helped fight the blaze that raged on for hours last night into the early morning hours. Then it flared up again around 5:30 a.m. With bandages covering the burns on his face, Schmidt joined his fellow firefighters in the firefight again.

“It wasn’t a big deal. It just hurt more in the beginning.”

The two-story house, which was for sale, is considered a total loss. A caretaker who was in the home when the fire first erupted Tuesday night was not injured.
