Texas billboard backs Confederate heritage, denounces Dallas

KEMP, Texas (AP) — A highway billboard in North Texas features Confederate flags and a cartoon-like character of a soldier in a gray uniform urinating on an image of the Dallas skyline.
The billboard in Kemp, a town of about 1,200 located 40 miles (64.37 kilometers) southeast of Dallas, includes the words “I Support Confederate Heritage.”
The Dallas City Council last month voted to remove the area’s Confederate War Memorial. Council members in 2017 voted to remove Confederate monuments, including a Robert E. Lee statue in a park.
City officials in Kemp say they don’t know who funded the billboard along Highway 175. Mayor Laura Peace told KDFW-TV that it’s a vulgar sign and not good for the community. KTVT-TV reports the sign is within view from a church and a day care center.
