AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas officials are planning to build a new $320 million psychiatric hospital in San Antonio to replace the city’s decades-old facility that’s deteriorating with slanted floors and sinking foundations.
The San Antonio Express-News reports that the Texas Health and Human Services Commission released design plans this week for the new San Antonio State Hospital, to be located at the same site as the old facility. The new hospital would group patients into smaller units, have open-air courtyards and more exercise areas.
The hospital’s assistant superintendent, Vincent Creazzo, says it’ll be a healthier environment for patients.
The new hospital is part of the state’s plan to update nearly half of its 10 aging psychiatric hospitals and accommodate growing patient demand. About 700 Texas patients waited for an open bed this week.
