Texas Tech medical school to stop using race in admissions

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Race will no longer be factored into admissions at Texas Tech University’s medical school under an agreement with the Trump administration.
The resolution is the first of its kind under Education Secretary Betsy Devos. It could preview how other affirmative action complaints are handled by her agency.
A copy of the resolution obtained Tuesday by The Associated Press shows that Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center agreed to “discontinue all consideration of an applicant’s race.” The resolution was signed in February and stemmed from a 2004 complaint.
The agreement was first reported by The Wall Street Journal.
Last year, the Trump administration said the government would no longer encourage schools to use race as a factor in the admissions process. That rescinded Obama-era guidance meant to promote diversity among students.
