SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) — Two men are dead and a woman is injured after a standoff and a fire on San Antonio’s South Side.

Police were called to a home on Belden Avenue around 4 pm Tuesday where a man was assaulting his wife.

“He beat her up very, very severely,” said San Antonio Police Chief William McManus.

When the woman escaped, her husband set their home on fire and started shooting.  McManus says the man shot and killed a neighbor across the street who was trying to help his wife.

“We understand that there might have been a history between them. He shot and killed that individual,” said McManus.

When officers arrived, the man laid down on the porch and kept firing until he was shot.

He was a threat and that’s what caused the SWAT officer to shoot him. He may well have been dead already,” said McManus.

The fire destroyed the home at 217 Belden and damaged a residence next door as firefighters were standing by, waiting for the shooting to stop before they could go  in and battle the blaze.

“We were waiting for an all-clear from SWAT because until that suspect is down, we’re not going to attack the fire. We don’t want to become a victim,” said San Antonio Fire Chief Charles Hood.
