TxDOT crews prep highways for possible wintry mix

SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) – Texas Department of Transportation crews have been pretreating highways ahead of a possible wintry mix Wednesday night into early Thursday.

There’s a chance for some snow mixed with rain, especially in the Hill Country and other areas Northwest of San Antonio, and while forecasters don’t expect it to stick to the ground, TxDOT is taking no chances. Crews started prepping sections of IH 10 from Loop 1604 to Kendall County and Kerr County .  Trucks are spreading a solution designed to keep snow and ice from forming on road surfaces .

“We are using brine, which is a salt water, something that we have been using for a few years and have found to be very effective,” said TxDOT spokeswoman Laura Lopez.

Crews also pretreated sections of Highway 281 north of Loop 1604, concentrating on elevated surfaces.

“We have finished on IH 10.  We did have our crews pretreat the interchange at Loop 1604 and IH 10 and Highway 281 and Loop 1604,” said Lopez.

Forecasters predict cold rain in San Antonio late Wednesday into early Thursday, but no snow along the IH 35 corridor, with heavier storms pounding areas east of the city.
