TxDOT proposes major widening of Loop 1604 in northern San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) — There are new plans to widen Loop 1604 from Bandera Road (State Highway 16) to Interstate 35 in Live Oak.

TxDOT will be holding two open houses next week to discuss the project.  The first one will be at Redland Oaks Community Church on Jones Maltsberger Road at 5 p.m. Tuesday.  The second will be at Brandeis High School on Kyle Seale Parkway at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

The plan is to widen the expressway from its current four lanes to a 10-lane expressway through the entire 23-mile stretch.  One lane in each direction will be reserved for high-occupancy vehicles.

Additionally, TxDOT plans to replace the current cloverleaf interchange between Loop 1604 and Interstate 10 to a direct connector interchange, similar to the work being done at U.S. 281.

There will also be changes made to entrance and exit ramps throughout the project area.

TxDOT told KTSA News Friday this work will be done in phases, starting at Bandera Road in 2021.
