SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) – “Frontiers of Blue…this is 72!” That’s the theme of this year’s Air Force birthday celebration with a focus on heritage, warfighting capability and innovation.

The Air Force was officially established September 18, 1947.

“Today we’re going faster, higher and smarter than ever before in air, space and cyberspace domains,” said Secretary of the Air Force Matthew Donovan.

Brig. Gen. Laura Lenderman, Commander of the 502nd Air Base Wing and Joint Base San Antonio, was at a recent City Council meeting for an early birthday celebration, complete with the traditional cutting of the cake with a military sword.

“We’re also celebrating the unbreakable bond between Military City USA and the hundreds of thousands of active duty, guard, reserve, civilians, retirees, veterans and their families who work in this community,” she said, with a special salute to a couple of city council members. “We salute the dedication and service of every airman, the men and women who came before us, airmen like Councilman (Clayton) Perry and Councilman (John) Courage, as well as those who currently serve.”

She noted that during the past 72 years, airmen have conducted basic military training, flight training, medical training, cybersecurity training, battlefield training and so much more in San Antonio.

“San Antonio is the home of American airpower,” said Lenderman.
