Uvalde Police Chief announces changes to physical fitness requirements for officers

SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) — More changes are coming to the Uvalde Police Department. This time it will involve the physical fitness requirements for the city’s police officers.

The topic came up during a city council meeting Tuesday night.

Some members of the community expressed concerns that some of the officers who responded to the massacre at Robb Elementary School in May are not physically fit.

Uvalde Police Chief Daniel Rodriguez heard the concerns and reached out to the Texas Department of Public Safety on how to address the problem. He told council members that “DPS has the best physical fitness instructor course in Texas” and wants to work with them.
He explained that they will now take part in a non-consecutive, six week DPS fitness test for officers.

Uvalde resident Adam Martinez asked Chief Rodriguez if the new requirements would apply only to new recruits.

The chief informed him that current officers will also have to pass the test twice a year.
