VIA employee succumbs to complications from COVID-19

SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) – A VIA employee has died  after being hospitalized for treatment of complications from COVID-19.

Pete M. Castillo worked as a Materials Handling Clerk in the Storeroom at VIA for nearly 28 years.  He had not been at work since June 17, and his positive test results were reported on June 24.  He passed away Sunday evening.

“It’s with great sadness I report the passing of one of our VIA family members, Pete M. Castillo. Please join me in keeping Mr. Castillo’s family and friends in your thoughts during this difficult time,” said Jeffrey Arndt, President and CEO of VIA Metropolitan Transit.

During Castillo received  VIA’s Excellence Award 11 times, most recently in 2019. The award recognizes Transportation and Fleet & Facilities employees who have excelled at professionalism, safety, attendance, and customer service.

“The many friends Mr. Castillo made during his career at VIA are a testament to his outstanding work ethic and willingness to help others, especially those who were new to the Storeroom,” Arndt said in a letter to VIA employees Sunday night.

Castillo is survived by his wife, Imelda and their two children.

“Let’s please continue to protect ourselves and each other by observing safety protocols and precautions, while at work, at home and in public,” Arndt said.
