VIA Again Offering Free Rides to the Polls Saturday

By Pilar Arias

Saturday’s election will be the third time VIA Metropolitan Transit will offer free rides to those who show a valid voter registration card.

The “Ride VIA to vote” initiative started last spring as a way to encourage civic participation throughout the service area. It provides free transportation on municipal, state and federal election days. All riders have to do is present their valid voter registration card to the van or bus operator.

VIA spokeswoman Lorraine Pulido said although the polls are open from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. May 6, the free rides will be offered all day.

VIA could not provide ridership numbers from past elections, but Pulido said the transit company has received overwhelming support from the community and realized it needs to continue offering the service.

The complimentary service will be available for regular bus service and VIAtrans paratransit service throughout the VIA service area. Registered VIAtrans customers should schedule their trip in accordance with VIAtrans policies and procedures.
