Whataburger plans expansion for San Antonio-area test kitchen

SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) — The Whataburger test kitchen near Alamo Quarry is reportedly getting some upgrades.

MySA reports the 6,137-square-foot test kitchen at 610 West Sunset Road will see more than $500,000 worth of renovations, according to a recent construction permit filing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.

The project will reportedly include both renovations to the test kitchen and the conversion of existing office space into an “equipment testing lab.” The filing states the budget for the expansion is $521,645, with construction expected to start in June and finish in October.

Whataburger is known for it’s seasonal offerings — often a mix of new and returning favorites. Most recently, the San Antonio-based company brought back (for a limited time) the Dr. Pepper milkshake alongside the new Spicy Honey Butter Chicken Biscuit and Southern Bacon burger and chicken sandwich.
