There’s a simple reason why a Southwest Legacy HS student was penalized for unfurling a Mexican flag as she walked the stage at graduation.
Here’s what I would say to her.
It’s not about Mexico, or immigrants, or pride.
Your diploma is yours, which is why they hand it to you.
The ceremony is not yours. It’s for everyone.
A lot of things in the life you’re starting out will also be like that, so get ready.
