Bexar County inmate found unresponsive in cell, dies at San Antonio hospital

SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) — An inmate at the Bexar County Jail died at a local hospital after he was found unresponsive in his cell.

It was just before noon Friday when a deputy was conducting checks. 40 year old Hector Lopez had suffered some sort of medical episode. The deputy called for help and began life saving measures until EMS arrived to transport Lopez to the hospital.

He was pronounced dead about an hour later.

Lopez had been held at the jail since January on a bench warrant from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office released the following statement:

“As per standard procedure, the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division (CID), Internal Affairs (IA), and The Public Integrity Unit (PIU) are conducting an investigation into this death. Currently, it appears that all BCSO policy and procedures were followed while the unit officer conducted his observation checks.”

The medical examiner will determine the cause of Lopez’s death.
